“Were You There” is an African American spiritual that was first published in 1899. The hymn reflects on the crucifixion of Jesus, using repetition and emotional depth to invite the listener to contemplate the suffering of Christ. It is one of the first African American spirituals to be widely recognized in mainstream hymnals.
